1. Scissor Doors
They rotate vertically about hinge on the front end of the door. The first vehicle to feature scissor doors was the 1968 ‘Alfa Romeo Carabo’. Lamborghini Aventador is a common example .
2. Butterfly Doors
They are mostly seen in super cars and exotic models capable of delevering a breathtaking performance. A few models using butterfly doors are ‘Enzo Ferrari’, ‘McLaren F1’ and ‘McLaren P1’
3. Gull wing Doors
They are hinged at the roof rather than the side. It first appeared in a 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300SL race car (W194), following it up with its road-legal version (W198) in 1954. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a common example .
4. Suicide doors
They are hinged at the rear rather than the front. They were first seen in horse carriages. When first introduced in cars, they made them prone to accidents for the lack of seat belts then. They are commonly used in Rolls Royce .
5. Swan Doors
Swan doors open outward like a conventional door but are hinge slightly upward as well for better ground clearance . Aston Martins are the most common example .
6. Sliding Doors
They in most cases are mounted on a track and need to be slid horizontally to open. They are seen in commercial vehicles like ‘Mini Vans’ which require easy access .
7. Canopy Doors
They are placed on top of the vehicle and lifts up, opening vertically. Some of its prime examples are Audi Urban Concept, Bond Bug, Bugatti Aerolithe
8. Falcon Wing Doors
They are new on the scene. They were recently introduced by Tesla in Model X. They allow easy access to second and third row seats from even a tight parking space.
They look similar to Gull wing Doors but are different in Operation . It requires less space and can be opened tighter places .
9. Disappearing Doors
They retract inside the car in the base allowing for a smoother entry and exit for passengers, increasing usability and safety. It was seen on Lincoln Mark VIII .
10. Front Hinged Doors
The frontal portion of the car is hinged and opens up along with the steering wheel. They were seen on Diminutive Isetta and charging Stratos Zero.
11. Doors fixed with the seats
The doors and seats are molded into a single unit. It was showcased by Peugeot in its concept car Peugeot EX-1.
