Years after admitting that her voice was dubbed by other artists, Katrina Kaif claims she has always dubbed for herself: ‘Just hard work’

When asked how she worked on her Hindi, and if any of her films were dubbed by someone, Katrina told Mid Day and resounding “no.” She shared that she started learning Devnagri script on the recommendation of Jackie Shroff and that helped her. She said, “No, no! It’s just hard work. It was hard work. I think it was Jackie Shroff who first told me to learn Devnagri and that was very important for me because in my first few films, at that time, the directors would write the lines on the set and give it to you. A lot of them would write in Devnagri and I never wanted to be in the position where I was like ‘what do I do?’ So, the first thing I did was to learn to read in Devnagri and that was the base which saved me.”

Katrina also credited her co-stars for helping her learn the Hindi language and shared that because she was determined to be a Bollywood actor, she was learning whatever was necessary. “Having and having amazing people to work with and just putting your head down and doing what is necessary and loving what you do. If you love what you do then you will put in the work. (I did) whatever it was, whether it was learning the language, whether it was dance that I needed to (work on),” she said.

While Katrina has rejected claims that her lines were ever dubbed by someone else, there were reports that Ram Gopal Verma and David Dhawan had to bring in dubbing artistes to dub her lines in Sarkar and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya respectively.

However, in 2007, after the success of Namastey London and Apne, the actor, who has a distinct British accent as she grew up in London, had said that she doesn’t like when others dub for her. She told IANS in an interview back then, “It really does add to the performance, honestly. Now I’ll be insisting on my own dubbing. When I look back at the movies where someone else dubbed for me I go, ‘No no no! That’s not me!’ But in Namastey London and now Apne, I felt I was watching and hearing myself.”

On the work front Katrina earned praise for her performances in Tiger 3 with Salman and Merry Christmas with Vijay Sethupathi.
