Kim Gogola Named Royal Oak High School's Outstanding Teacher

Innovative teacher taught lesson on elections by simulating one using city's voting equipment.

ROYAL OAK, MI – A government and history teacher whose commitment to experiential learning resulted in a simulated election using city of Royal Oak election equipment has been named the school district’s 2015-2016 Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year.

The honor went to Kim Gogola, a ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade government U.S. history teacher with Royal Oak schools for the past 15 years.

“Ms. Gogola creates authentic experiences for her students to engage them in their learning,” Principal Michael Giromini wrote in his nomination. “Her lessons make the learning relevant to each of her students.

“As a bonus, her never-ending energy level keeps students focused and ready to learn,” Giromini wrote. “You can regularly see the students mirroring her energy level and enthusiasm: It’s infectious!”

In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Gogola has been on the School Improvement Team, the Positive Behaviors, Intervention and Support team, and is the Social Studies Department Chair.

She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in history and master’s degree in education and curriculum.

As Royal Oak’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Gogola is a nominee for Oakland School’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year program which honors and recognizes teachers who have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession.
