How to Sprout Sorghum (Jowar) and Its Health Benefits?

In my previous post, I shared how to sprout peanuts and this post is about sprouting sorghum (jowar). The process is exactly the same as peanuts. If you have tried that, then you know what to do.

What is Sorghum?

Sorghum, also known as jowar/cholam/jonna is an ancient gluten-free, whole-grain with numerous health benefits. It is a kind of millet and has recently re-gained popularity. Its available in the whole-grain form, as steel cut porridge and also as a flour. Sorghum flour is one of the easiest to handle when making gluten free rotis and breads.

How to use sprouted Jowar?

  • make milk (can use as it is or roast before making milk)
  • steam and add in salads (will have to steam in pressure cooker as it is quite hard)
  • steam and enjoy with curries
  • make idli/dosa batter

Sprouted Sorghum (Jowar)

Equipment

  • Cheese cloth/muslin cloth/nut milk bag
  • Colander

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Sorghum whole
  • Water as required

Instructions
 

  • Soak the sorghum in 3 cups water for 5-8 hours
  • You will know you have soaked enough once you notice air bubbles on the surface of the water
  • Rinse it well in fresh water
  • Take the muslin cloth and rinse it under the water and squeeze out the excess water. we need this to be slightly damp, not dripping water.
  • Place the cloth in the colander, add the sorghum/jowar and fold the cloth over
  • Check every 5-8 hours. When the cloth feels dry, spray some water. We need to keep the sprouts moist.
  • After 14-36 hours (depending on the weather), you will notice a tiny tail at one end of the sorghum grains. The sprouts are ready.
  • You can use this to make milk or steam it and add to your salads.
  • You can also dry them in shade for 2 days and then roast to make milk. This roasted sprouts can be stored in air tight glass jar for few weeks.
