Between Sales And Set-Up, Of Course There Will Be A ‘Spider-Man 3’

Following

There’s been a quote going around from Insomniac Creative Director Bryan Intihar when he was speaking to SkillUp in a recent interview “teasing” another sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.

"If Spider-Man 1 [was] like our Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2 was like our Civil War... Where logically do we go from there? It could be pretty epic."

The analogy here would seem to suggest uh, well I’m not sure exactly. If we’re heading into Avengers Endgame as the third example, that’s when Tony Stark dies, so I’m not sure how well that bodes for Peter. Given the tone of these games I kind of doubt it.

But the point is that Spider-Man 3 is coming, and I mean, of course Spider-Man 3 is coming. This was never a question. This was always going to follow the same format as the last two entries given that this is PlayStation’s current most successful franchise, like a smaller, spin-off game, then a full sequel. As I’ve point out before, Spider-Man 1 was the top-selling PS exclusive over all other franchises with 20 million sold. Miles Morales brought that to 33 million. Now, Spider-Man 2 has become the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever with 2.5 million copies sold in 24 hours.

Even though Insomniac is doing a big Wolverine game next, yes, there is no chance that Spider-Man does not get a third, possibly conclusive, possibly not, entry in the series. While a trilogy would make sense, Spider-Man is also one of Sony’s single greatest assets, so I’d be surprised if they just left him on a shelf. But maybe by a fourth entry it would be some sort of reboot.

Then there’s also the game itself which is blatantly teasing future content during its various endings. To discuss those, we’ll have to get into spoiler territory.

  • There’s the reveal of Carnage arriving as a second symbiote when Cletus Kasady gets ahold of one, though I believe this is teasing a Miles-size Venom spin-off that is also likely coming.
  • There’s the end credit sequence where Norman Osborne, blaming Peter and the Spider-Men for his son’s condition (as opposed to you know, being the guy who put the symbiote on his son in the first place), is recruiting the jailed Otto Octavius to plan revenge. It seems fairly obvious that we are heading toward Green Goblin territory, one of the only big villains yet to appear in the franchise.
  • Miles’ ending also indicates we will be expanding the Spider-Team. It’s revealed that Miles’ mother is dating the father of Cindy Moon, a girl who was bitten by the same spider that gave Peter his powers in the comic, eventually becoming the hero known as Silk. Whether she’d be playable or not, I don’t know.

Just…tons and tons of set-up. A third game is coming. There’s no question. The only unknown is when.
