  • Overview

From 1992 to 2010, we saw GM’s Hummer H1, H2, and H3 models top the off-roading market. However, due to lack of practicality and poor fuel economy, the Hummer was discontinued. The model was just too powerful to be affordable to the general public, making it mostly only available to celebrities and very wealthy drivers. But behind the scenes, GM has been spending the past several years of Hummer's hiatus to create a solution to the Hummer’s impractical fuel usage roadblock, and that solution is the 2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV model.

The new Hummer EV will be available in truck form as well, but classic Hummer fans will, of course, be drawn to the classic SUV variant. We’re seeing many new electric trucks and SUVs popping up on the market now that EV technology is growing and science knows how to make these models powerful. The days of only having weak electric commuter cars are over, and the new Hummer EV is playing a big role in making this a reality. This is more than your average commuter-friendly EV; the 2023 Hummer EV SUV is a powerhouse that is showing the world that electric power is so much better.

So Much More Power Than Anything Else on the Road

There’s a lot to say about the 2023 Hummer EV SUVs performance. Between its strength, its electric power source, and its off-roading capability, this model can do a little bit of everything. First, we’ve got its massive torque and horsepower. The Hummer EV SUV can get up to 11,500 pound-feet of torque and up to 830 horsepower. By comparison, a 2010 Hummer got up to 310 pound-feet of torque and 300 horsepower with a V8 engine.

So, not only does the 2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV offer more power than previous Hummer models, it removes the need for fuel expenses entirely. Before you start thinking that the Hummer’s charge only lasts a short period of time, you’ll need to think again. This model has up to an estimated 300-mile drive range at a full charge. Basically, what this means is that on a full charge, the 2023 Hummer EV SUV will last almost as long as a V6 Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco does on a full tank of gas. But instead of needing to spend over $40.00 on a fill-up, you simply have to plug in the Hummer to charge overnight.

Plus, you’re getting a ton more horsepower and torque than you would with any other off-roading SUV. Put simply; you can go 0 to 60 in as little as 3.5 seconds yet not spend a dime on fuel. If you want something that packs a lot of power yet will still save you money at the pump, the Hummer EV is the vehicle for you.

    Off-Roading

Now for off-roading specs. GM’s biggest perk here is their implementation of Terrain Mode and Extract Mode. These are two brand-new modes that are specific to the new Hummer EV models. While the Hummer EV truck does a little better than the SUV when it comes to power, the SUV takes the lead where off-roading is concerned.

    Driving Made for Trail Conditions

The Terrain Mode adds in One-Pedal Driving that’s specified for off-roading only. Basically, this option lets drivers use one pedal for acceleration while the Hummer holds itself back without the need for braking. In Terrain Mode, the Hummer EV SUV has a 12-inch ground clearance, which is even higher than both the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco. It can also push through up to 28 inches of water, and it has a 44.3-degree approach angle that is ever so slightly higher than the Wrangler Rubicon. The approach angle is important for off-roading because it determines how high the vehicle can “ramp up” when approaching edges, roads, and hills.

Extract Mode goes way further by increasing the Hummer’s ground clearance to 16 inches, its water fording level to 32 inches, and its approach angle to 49.6 degrees. So, no matter which mode you choose, you’re still getting much better off-roading specs than the leading competition can offer. And that’s not even half of it. The Hummer EV SUV also comes with a full set of underbody armor. It’s not just a few additional skid plates for this one. These steel plates are designed to protect the Hummer’s Utilum battery setup no matter how rocky the pavement is.

The only major downside to larger vehicles is that they can be difficult to maneuver. GM’s 4-Wheel Steer is yet another new off-roading feature that’s offered on the Hummer EV SUV. When you need tighter, more precise turns, kick it into 4-Wheel Steer to increase the Hummer’s maneuverability. Overall, the 2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV’s performance specs seem almost unbelievable given its electric setup, but the future we’ve been waiting for is now.

  • Exterior

Hummer is known for its wide-body design. It essentially looks like a much beefier Jeep Wrangler. However, when it was originally released, GM received many complaints about how the model was stressful to drive on the highway due to its size. The good news is that the new Hummer EV SUV keeps its large stature but in a more convenient way. It’s still a large SUV model, but it’s not so massive that it’s undriveable or difficult to maneuver on main roadways like Hummer’s earliest designs.

A Commanding Figure on the Road

This model comes with two different wheel sizes, which are 22-inch and the off-roading package’s 18-inch with 35-inch mud tires. You’ll get to choose from 8 different colors, including neutrals, orange, blue, and green. The special First Edition SUV will only be available in the Moonshot Green shade. Like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, the 2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV will come with a spare tire on the back and removable roof inserts. It’s actually more unique in this aspect because it includes tinted transparent roof inserts, so even when the roof is in, you can see nature without getting a sunburn.

Additionally, the Hummer’s grille uses LED lighting to illuminate both the road and the “Hummer” lettering. But the 2023 Hummer EV SUVs exterior is not only visually appealing, it’s convenient as well. It includes a Power Swing Gate, which allows drivers to open their tailgates at the press of a button. Overall, this new electric model offers strong competition in the off-roading SUV market.

  • Technology

Super Cruise Makes On-Road Driving More Fun

A fully electric model obviously offers plenty of tech features. However, there’s one technology feature that stands out most on the 2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV, and that’s its Super Cruise component. This is a hands-free driving technology that uses specific road maps to steer the Hummer for you. While this may seem intimidating at first, don’t worry, there are several safety features involved here.

First off, Super Cruise includes a Driver Attention System which can detect if drivers are ignoring the road and giving the Super Cruise feature too much control. Second, it uses cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data to predict changes in the roadway. Super Cruise also works with Adaptive Cruise Control, Enhanced Automatic Braking, and Lane Centering to keep you safe in traffic while using this Hands-Free system.

    Enhanced Technology All-Around

The new Hummer EV SUV also comes with something called an UltraVision system which offers 18 different camera views, which is more than any competing off-roading model. It even includes waterproof cameras that are attached to the Hummer’s underbody so that you can see every terrain rut and hole without having to find out the hard way.

Further, it offers its very own Hummer-customized sound system, which has 14 Bose speakers with Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement. This technology is used to mask road and vehicle sounds and create a better music streaming experience. This model includes typical tech features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well, but these are the features that really make it stand out.
