If you’re on the search for a new HUMMER vehicle, Serra Buick GMC Champaign is here to help. We’re excited to have the new HUMMER EV on our lot, which features impressive off-road programs and high-tech safety features. Here’s a closer look at how we got to this stage in HUMMER development and production.

HUMMER Early History

It can be a little strange to think of the HUMMER as an eco-friendly vehicle, considering how the model was first introduced. It debuted in 1992, when was a symbol of the capability of modern SUV engineering. In fact, the first HUMMER models were inspired by military vehicles, which is why they have the stance and shape of modern tanks.

In the late 1990s, the HUMMER name was purchased by General Motors. They then went on to produce the HUMMER H1, which was most closely based on military models, as well as the smaller and more athletic HUMMER H2 and HUMMER H3 models.

The early HUMMERs took more than just design inspiration from military vehicles. They were also incredibly capable—which required a lot of fuel for use. Rising gas prices of the early 2000s made it difficult to sell the HUMMER, and in 2010, the brand was officially defunct.

HUMMER Modern History

The new GMC HUMMER EV is a vehicle that defies all expectations, and flips the script on what a capable, powerful, and exciting SUV can do and be. That’s because in 2022, it was officially revived in the form of electric truck and electric SUV model options. It still delivers all the power and capacity you can always expect from HUMMER vehicles, but this time, without leaving a trace.
