Acyclovir is available as a topical antiviral medication used for the treatment of cold sores and/or genital herpes symptoms. Duration of treatment most often ranges from 4 to 10 days.

  • Used for the treatment of oral herpes simplex virus (HSV-1, cold sores) and to relieve symptoms of genital herpes (HSV-2)
  • Should be started as early as possible at onset of signs and symptoms of cold sore (i.e. tingling, redness, itching or a bump) and/or genital lesions
  • Applied topically 5 times a day for 4 days for cold sores and dosed 6 times a day for 7 days for genital herpes
